Collagraph etching carved into heavy peg board – 24 in x 20.5 in. This piece is an original etching that is rarely available for sale as it is usually kept archived by the artist. The collagraph depicts a Crow mother tenderly comforting her daughter after not winning a dance at the pow-wow. The sepia tone you see is a trademark of the artist who is inspired by old photographs he saw growing up. The frame is constructed from reclaimed barn wood harvested by the artist himself. Lazy Susan made out of hand burned pine. The hand painted design depicts the traditional Navajo Ceremonial Basket with the red, white, and black colors. The black design symbolizes the darkness (night) and clouds that bring rain. The white part inside the black design represents the sacred mountains. The hand painted design depicts the Man in the Maze - according to O'odham oral history, the labyrinth design depicts experiences and choices we make in our journey through life. In the middle of the “maze”, a person finds their dreams and goals. When one reaches the center, we have one final opportunity (the last turn in the design) to look back upon our choices and path, before the Sun God greets us, blesses us and passes us into the next world.

Clay mask with acrylic paint – 4in x 6 in Yei bichei or “maternal grandfather of the yei” is another name of Talking God. He is invoked, along with eight other male yei, in the “Night Chant” or “Nightway” sometimes simply called “Yei bichei” - a multiple-night ceremony in which masked dancers personify the gods.
